Fancy box: May

"Fancy in full effect. Get your Fancy fix at home with our monthly subscription service featuring a collection of some of the most fancy'd items, curated by the fancy community. Each box includes $80.00+ of products in the categories of your choice."  This is not (to the best of my understanding) a themed crate, although you get to decide what three things interest you the most (women's, men's, home, media, gadgets, and kids.  They have about a dozen curated versions and you can google other reviews of those but they've never interested me.  No, Fancy dragged me in once I got 2 amazing mystery boxes.  Fancy is $39 a month and I just learned while writing this that you can return one item a month if you don't like it!

The unveiling--and remember, if you want beautiful pictures, you've came to the wrong blog.  These pictures are what's going to happen when you actually open your box, assuming you aren't the Martha Stewart type.  And if you are, I bow in your direction.

Fancy usually comes in attractive boxes and gives you stickers (it was well packed, I just took it all out).

Y-Split Headphones

"The Y-SPLIT 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Splitter is the perfect solution for sharing your music with friends and family. Connect 2 sets of headphones or speakers to your Smartphone or Tablet.
Features:
Share your music with friends and family
Connect 2 headphones or speakers to 1 device"

My take: I feel no need at all for this and it's very likely to be sold on eBay or my swapping Pinterest page.  I mean, I see the value, but I'm never watching my iPad with someone else where I can't have the sound on, so it's not needed.

Verdict: Selling

Value: $15

NCLA Nail Wraps

"From Sunny Southern California, NCLA's runway-inspired nail fashion wraps are ultra thin, easy to apply and long lasting with no drying time. Each kit of 26 nail wraps + nail file will yield 3-4 applications.
Nail set includes:
• 26 ultra-thin self-adhesive nail wraps
• NCLA nail file
• Easy-to-follow directions
What's not to love? All you need is clear polish. You instantly top off any look and outfit. It couldn't be any easier! "

My take: I'm a big proponent of manicures and I've never used these before.  I actually don't like flashy nails and these aren't my style at all.

Verdict: Selling

Value: $16

Not much to explain on this one--it's a shirt.  It says "Weekend Warrior"
My take: Another that I just don't love.  I'll probably wear it to work out, even though I'm more of a tank girl at the gym than a tee-shirt girl.

Verdict: Reluctantly keep.

Value: $28

beauty is skin deep
women's essentials
kit (calm)
concept.
once was the time when your world was filled with rose-coloured dreams of being swept off your feet; now you’re content with not having your bags nicked before you land. this is a kit of essentials to replace the irreplaceable and keep you looking fresh.
contains.
50ml the therapist shampoo
50ml the therapist conditioner
50ml the great hydrator moisture mask
50ml soap dodger body wash
50ml self indulgence body crème

My take: I'm oddly excited about this one!  I've had really good luck with the random stuff I've gotten in these boxes and I love trying new shampoos and conditioners.  I'll probably gift away the body wash and body creme (or put it on Pinterest)

Verdict: Keep!

Value: $30

AJ Morgan Sunglasses

Pretty much just sunglasses in a REALLY heavy duty case.

My take:I hate the color orange and, oddly, I hate sunglasses.

Verdict: Imagine that gif of the octopus saying nope.  That's me and these glasses.  They will be on Pinterest or Ebay.

Value: $30

All in all, about $120 worth of stuff for about $39 plus the excitement of unexpected stuff and MAIL!  MAIL THAT ISN'T BILLS!  Love it.

Another month?  I adored my mystery boxes so much I'm going to stick out another month.  The stuff was very high value, just not my type this month.

Top 9 TJOTJOC posts of all time!! Or at least until now.

Add to Technorati FavoritesAs I get back into the swing of posting, I thought I would do a "best of" list.  Here is a list of my top 9 posts of all time (according to Google) and my memory of them.  (Also, if you are going to post my stuff on Pinterest--and I love that--please don't post my very ugliest pictures!  Come on, guys!).

1.

Meatloaf I (p. 512), Meat Loaf Sandwich (p. 183), Thousand Island Dressing (p. 576), and Cabbage, Potatoes, and Ham (p. 263)

This is the best meatloaf recipe ever.  I'm not sure what makes it so great--there aren't any weird ingredients or anything, so it must really be just the exact right ingredient proportions.  Can't recommend this one enough.

2.

Baked Macaroni and Cheese (p. 326), White Sauce I (p. 550), Buttered Breadcrumbs (p. 960), and Corn Bread, Muffins, or Sticks (p.632)

I always like baked mac and cheese more than stovetop because I like a crunchy top.  Frankly, everyone should be able to make white sauce at the drop of a hat, too, because it's the base of about a billion recipes.

3.

Slow-cooker stock (p. 118), Chicken-fried steak (p. 475), Fried eggplant III (p. 273), and Jamaican rice and peas (p. 356)

I'm guessing the stock is the reason people read this one so much.  I don't really see the point of slow cooker stock and I've never made it again--it's so easy to make on the stove, I don't see the point.  I love that chicken fried steak recipe, I make fried eggplant all the time, and I don't remember the rice and peas at all.

4.

Shortbread crust (p. 667), New York-style cheesecake (p. 744), Chocolate satin frosting (p. 796), and Fresh raspberry sauce (raspberry coulis)(p. 853)

Okay, this one I get.  This cheesecake was a beautiful work of art, the crust was delicious, and the sauces were the best.

5.

Guy Fawkes Day cake (p. 724)

Another one that confuses me.  Do people really make this cake that often or do they just wonder what it is?

6.

Pulled pork (p. 500), Southern barbecue dry rub (p. 587), Western North Carolina barbecue sauce (p. 587), and Ray's mustard barbecue sauce (p. 586)

Pulled pork is SOOOOO easy to make and I always make my own barbeque sauce--it's easy and you get exactly what you want.

7.

Beef Stroganoff (p. 476)

Not my favorite.  Never been my favorite, never going to be my favorite.

8.

Chicken or turkey fricassee (p. 432)

I apparently really liked this when I made it but it included one of my biggest TJOC pet peeves--having to dig around chicken bones in sauce.  I haven't made it since.

9.

Chili Con Carne (p.513) and Mexican Orange Drops (p. 874)

I don't like chili con carne because I like my chili to have ground beef and not chunks of beer.  The orange drops were great though.

Loot Crate May: Adventure

Add to Technorati FavoritesAdd to Technorati FavoritesLoot Crate: "Loot Crate is the monthly gear and swag club for those that live and embrace the geek and gaming lifestyle. Loot Crate is a product discovery box, connecting our subscribers, known as Looters, with the best new and emerging companies producing gear, snacks, toys, hardware, art, and other goodies for the geek and gaming market. Each month, Loot Crate handpicks 6-8 new items to include in the box, which are kept secret until the boxes are delivered!"  Every month has a theme and May's theme was ADVENTURE.

I am definitely a geek (thousands of comics, walls covered in comic and video game art, love of comic conventions, lover of urban fantasy novels (HARRY DRESDEN FOREVER!), and such but there are huge swaths of geekery that I'm not into so I didn't know how this box would go for me.

The unveiling--and remember, if you want beautiful pictures, you've came to the wrong blog.  These pictures are what's going to happen when you actually open your box, assuming you aren't the Martha Stewart type.  And if you are, I bow in your direction.

This is what the box looks like:

I opened it and had a great feeling once I took everything out.  I was an old NES style gamer in the days where you had to call an expensive number to get hints for your damn games and you had to use little tricks like this:

LOVE IT.

The shirt:

Apparently there isn't always a shirt but, when there is, they warn you so you can select the correct size.  This shirt is going to be heartily fought over by my friends and family because it is awesome.  Honestly, who doesn't love Link?  And this sucker is stylized and amazing.

My take: AWESOME.  But I will probably give it up to someone who loves it even more.

Verdict: I love it but I bet it's going to get wrestled away from me.

Value: $19.99

Next is this penguin tin from Adventure Time:

My take:  I've never watched Adventure Time and, other than seeing people dressed up in AT costumes at Comic-Con and hearing Felicity Day talk about it at a panel, I have absolutely no idea what it's about.  It's getting regifted

Verdict:  Present for a friend.

Value: $6.67

Minecraft Hanger:

My take:  I'm not a Minecraft fan.  Again, I'm not even sure what it is.  But I know one thing--my brother is a HUGE fan.  So this will make a great gift.

Verdict:  Gift for my happy brother.

Value:  $5.99

Keychain:

My take:  Legend of Zelda keychain bottle opener???  This sucker is mine.  Everybody is going to want it but I'm going to keep it.  I love it.  It says "It's dangerous to go alone, take this", like it knows I always need a bottle opener!  Best things so far!

Verdict:  MINE.

Value: I have no idea what this is worth.  A lot to me, maybe $2 to everyone else?

Various other stuff:

My take: A lot of stickers, temporary tattoos, a pin (Loot Crate sends a crate every month) and such.  I think most are based on Youtube Minecraft personalities but I'm not sure about that.

Verdict:  The stuff is cute but I don't have a burning need for it.  If you want it, email me.

Value:  Who knows?  I'm going to say $10 for it all.

All in all, about $45 worth of stuff for about $20 plus the excitement of unexpected stuff and MAIL!  MAIL THAT ISN'T BILLS!  Love it.

Another month?  Yes, I'm sticking with Lootcrate for another month.

To join Loot Crate click here!  It's $19.37 a month.  I'm not going to go into shipping speed or delivery method--if you want that, there are plenty of other blogs that will give you that information.

CODE:  If you order now and use the code JUNELOOT you get $3 off your first month!

The RELAUNCH!

Add to Technorati FavoritesWhat an exciting day this is going to be for everyone!  This is my relaunch of TJOTJOC!  Just what you've all been waiting for!

So, here's the rundown.

Schedule from now on:  I'm going to post at least a post a week.  It's very possible I'm going to write these all at once but I'm going to schedule them so they come out periodically.

Why the break?  I have had a lot of personal issues but on top of that, I just lost my passion for blogging.  I still was cooking but I managed to get so spectacularly behind I couldn't even imagine how I would ever catch up.  And that bogged me down.  And then I just gave up.  I had an entire Thanksgiving's worth of recipes on a phone that was stolen.  I was downtrodden.

So what changed?  My cousin, Erica, made the point that I could do whatever I want to catch up because it's my blog.  I can just summarize the recipes, I can post them in detail, I can cook them again.  I can do whatever I want because this blog is totally mine.  And that was empowering!  So I'm just going to start blogging about what I'm cooking and do exactly that to catch up--write up some old posts, summarize other, and just totally recook a few.

AND WHAT'S NEW?  Much like some of you, I've fallen in love with subscription boxes.  I actually switched out my bar budget for a subscription box budget (much healthier in the long run!).  I'm going to post about them.  If you like this, great!  If you hate it, skip them!  Simple.  The first week is going to be subscription box heavy but don't worry--the food will come back and be about 75% of the posts.

What else is new?  I've updated all the pages up top!  Make sure to comment and let me know what you think of the changes.  I'm excited and I hope you are too.

I love you all!  Thank you for sticking with me through the years!
